In December, Nicolette Landi had tickets to see a Mariah Carey show at Madison Square Garden. But she was turned away at the door — she had been flagged by a facial recognition system and was, it turned out, on the arena’s watch list.

Ms. Landi was not a traditional security threat; she is a personal injury lawyer. The problem? Her firm was in a fight with the company that operates Madison Square Garden, and she had been caught in the middle.
